The Malindi resort area is a fascinating place
to explore. Start with the Arabuko – Sukoke Forest, the largest
tract of indigenous forest left in East Africa.
This forest offers us three forests in one: thick mixed costal forest, open woodland on white soil and low, dense thicket on red soil. The forest headquarters and visitor centre is 1,500 meters south of Watamu junction.
There is a glorious variety of butterflies, and for bird watchers, the forest is very special.

There are over 230 species of birds, including
six found only here: Sokoke Pipit, Amanu Sunbird, Clark’s weaver,
East Coast akalat and Spotted ground thrush. Information books on
the forest are available at the bookshops in the town, and in the
forest headquarters.
